Church Growth Inc. (CGI) is a 23-year old ministry organization dedicated to the research and dissemination of how local churches grow. Basically, churches grow in three methods: biological growth, transfer growth, and conversion growth. CGI believes the primary call is the pursuit of conversion growth — the reaching out to, winning, and assimilating of previously un-reached people into the local congregation. "Parable of the Talents” event at Unity of Charlotte - This year, we’ll have the kick-off in late October, and the sale on the Saturday before Thanksgiving (giving people a chance to buy Christmas gifts). Doing it on a Saturday may help involve more than just our own congregation. We will probably offer a lunch of some kind. If there are things left at the end of the fair, we will offer them again after church on Sunday.
At the kick-off, we have a Parable Team Director with a lot of cash to give out. Last year, we gave out some $1,200 in $10’s and $20’s. (We had $2,000 on hand. We kept some in our safe for a couple of weeks, as some people wanted money the next couple of Sundays. The money came from our building fund and was replaced after the day of the sale.) The idea is to for each of us to use one or more of our talents to increase the money, and that we will have a sale/fair a month later to support their efforts. People can take anywhere from $10 to $50, and we don’t keep track of who took how much money.
For the Sunday lesson on kick-off Sunday, I do a talk on the Parable, doing a metaphysical interpretation (5 relating to senses, 2 to “Yes and No”, and 1 to oneness with God) as well as talking about the idea of the event. I let them know that this is an opportunity to do something that will both support Unity of Charlotte and themselves at the same time. I ask them to consider questions like, “Is there a hobby they like to do but don’t take the time for? Is there a skill you would like to practice so you could get better at? Is there something you want to do just for the joy of doing it?” I shared that I often do something in woodworking, which I really enjoy and often don’t take time to do. (Last year I made cutting boards. I also took a favorite saying, a quote of Emmett Fox’s on “The Power of Love,” and printed it on nice paper with frames I bought on sale at Michael’s.)
Last year, we made a net profit of $1,300 at the sale. We had people do things as diverse as selling a day of trout fishing, making Christmas cookies & health food treats, giving shoe shines at the fair, selling a delivered pizza upon request by giving free samples, making jewelry, soaps, and other crafts, selling services such as helping people get organized, giving airplane rides, selling tickets for a concert put on by several musicians, etc. At one of these events in another city, someone sold week-long vacations with him on his sailboat. That one alone brought in over $1,000. As you can see, the ideas are limited only by people’s imagination.
This year, I may have a 2-hour “creativity” workshop on the kick-off Sunday. Last year, there were people who believed they had no talents. That is, of course, nonsense but I want to be able to support those who have that thought. Wherever I’ve put on this event, people have loved it – both expressing their talents and coming to the fair. It’s always made money for the church, but even more important, it’s taught wonderful lessons about win/win and self-expression. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask. - Phil Smedstad, Unity of Charlotte
